Play Ball

This past weekend Jessie and I asked my parents to keep our girls so we could get the nursery painted and ready for Wesley.  After all, he will be here in less than FOUR weeks!  Over the last several months, we have discussed ideas for Wesley's room.  We knew we wanted an overall baseball themed baby nursery.  We had several ideas that would have been over-the-top awesome, but we had to stick with our most economical idea.
And we are really happy with the results!  There are a few tiny details and accessories missing, but you can get the general idea.
We painted the full wall (right) and upper half of the other walls a creamy tan.
You can see to the right a rough sketch of what is to come....
We used a slightly darker tan (leftover from another room) to create a seam.
We made little hashmarks along the curve and I used a spongebrush
to paint the stitches along the seams
Don't look too close at my freehand work. :)
Jessie went back and added some shading for "holes" to add some dimension to the stitches.
The finished baseball wall!

You can see the navy portion of the wall in this picture,
but no chair rail yet.
Jessie had a little fun with the name above the hutch using
some little baseball figures from his collection, and the 3ft Chipper Jones
bobblehead on the floor.  You can see the finished chair rail in this pic.
The piece above the closet says "play ball". The toddler
jersey is a Smoltz jersey. And the space to the right
is for the custom wall art below...

Overall, we are so pleased with how Wesley's room turned out.  Every time I walk by I have to peak in or go look around for a minute (I know that Jessie does it too).  Now, that his room is complete, we are looking forward to bringing our little man home!

I couldn't resist...I have to include a picture of my diaper bag that I am super excited about using!!  Jessie surprised me with this bag for Christmas!

While in the hospital, I asked the nursery if they could get Wesley's handprint on a baseball I brought with me.  The nursing staff at our hospital was so great...have been for all three of our children.  They got the perfect print of Wesley's little hand!  I want to have a plaque made with his name, birthdate, birthweight and length.  But for now, this is how it is displayed in his room.

  3. Hi. I was just wondering if you could tell me the actual name of hte color tan you used for the main wall - and what type of paint it was (so i can match it out at my local paint store)? We are just doing a sports room for our son and that would be an awesome accent wall. thanks

    1. Sure! I'm flattered that you want to re-create it! Thank you! :)

We color matched it to the bedding you see in the pictures. I wanted more of an antique looking ball, rather than stark-white and red-red. So here is all the technical info:
Lowes Valspar Signature Colors, interior eggshell: "Holmes Cream" (upper portion of wall and baseball accent wall), "Royal Navy" (lower portion of wall with chair rail). For the red "threading" we bought a half-pint Olympic sample. I think it was less than $5 for the sample and it didn't take much. The red was satin, "Apple-a-day".
I hope this helps. Let me know how it turns out...I'd love to see pics!

I also suggested the handprint on the baseball, I think it is already in the hospital 'go bag'. Thanks again :)

    1. Sure! If you look really close at the line on the pic of me painting the red slashes, you can see 2 tiny pencil marks every 4 inches. After I painted the stitches, my husband decided to go back with the darker tan we used for the line and dab around the outside of the stitch so it looked like a hole. It's not perfect, but it was a fun project!

  23. Found you on pinterest like everyone else :) Have a question about how you came up with the angle / curve of the seams... did you use a protractor or just free hand it?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I free-handed it. As for the angle, I had an actual baseball next to me and I just looked at how the threads kind of curved upward on one side and downward on the other side..and they almost overlap each other on the seam. Does that make sense? If you can find a softball or baseball laying around, you'll see what I mean. We did measure and make little pencil marks every 4 inches along the curve/seam. I hope this helps. :)

  25. I have looked at this baseball wall quite a few times. I LOVE IT and want to do it in my sons room. He is 5 and LOVES baseball. What I can't figure out is how you drew the semi-circles. I get how you painted and all but the semi-circles are perfect, how did you do it? Thanks again! LOVE IT

    1. Hmm...that's a good question. I'll try to explain our process. We stood back and really discussed how we pictured the curves, looking at the angles of a real baseball as our guide. I wanted them slightly asymmetrical. I knew about where I wanted the curves to hit the ceiling and baseboard. So we started by putting a tiny nail in each corner with a string attached and cut to the length of where I wanted the curve to hit the ceiling (and baseboard for the other curve). We attached a pencil to the other end and tried to hold a steady hand to make our curve. In theory is was a great idea, but it would have been better with something sturdy because the string allowed the pencil to "wobble"...BUT it gave us an imperfect curve to start with. Then I just stood back to look at the wall...and where the curve was "wobbly" I fixed it with the pencil to make the curve look better. We painted over the line we liked with a sponge brush, still making adjustments where needed, and cleaned up all the pencil marks that still showed. See, it was all trial & error. If you could see my wall in person, you would see that it's really not perfect. I bet you'll think of a way to do it that's much more efficient. ;)

    2. this is too funny! I just did this same thing with basketball threads. I saw that you did the baseball so I decided to do each wall a different sport. I was so trying to figure out the arch and did the same thing before reading your blog. Great idea! Nice work. My son loves, loves, loves it!

  26. What was the darker tan color called? I think this is awesome and Im trying to recreate. Thanks (:

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. It's Valspar Satin "Faint Maple". But honestly, you won't need a lot of that color for the seam & shading. If they have some discounted tan colors at the hardware store I'd just get that, or a small half-pint. Good luck! :)

      Delete
  27. I'm doing this for my nephew's nursery this weekend and was wondering...do you think acrylic paint would work just as well? Did you use most of the half-pint that you purchased or was there a lot left over? I'm just trying to get an idea of how much paint I need to get and if the acrylic I already have in these colors would work for the stitching.
Thanks for the awesome idea!! :)

  30. Hello, I've been wanting to do something like this in my son's room for some time but wasn't sure how to go about doing it. So, you can imagine how excited I was when I saw this! I'm very nervous about trying this (seeing I have NO artistic ability) I was wandering about the holes for the stitches. Are they (the holes) are both sides of each stitch? And, the seams, are they the same distance from the wall on each side?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. It doesn't have to be perfect. I intentionally made the curves asymmetrical (the curve on the right is bigger). We just did the hole shading around the end of the stitch NOT touching the seam. Sketch it out with a pencil...stand back, and if your curves look "off" make adjustments with your pencil as much as needed. Then paint over the "good" line and erase all the outside sketching or wipe off with a damp cloth. If you mess up..it's just paint! :)

  32. I love this!! You guys did a great job! I have been wanting to do this but am so scared!! If you don't mind me asking, how far down from the ceiling did you start the line on the right and left side of the wall? Thanks!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Hmm..I'm not sure, I'll have to go measure it. His ceiling is 8 feet. I just kind of stood back and visualized where I wanted the curves and I knew I didn't want them to be the same on both sides. I'll measure and let you know, but I would also say...just step back and picture your lines and where you want them. Make a pencil mark. Then make cut a string that goes from the corner (tack it in) to that mark, attach a pencil and make a wobbly curve. Step back and look at the horrible curve, then fix it with your pencil. Paint the curve that you like and erase the rest of the marks. I hope this helps, because honestly, that's exactly what we did! :)

We are moving into a new house and I wanted to do my sons room in something cool that was sports themed, and I may have to "steal" the baseball wall idea :) He is 15 months and I wanted to do his room in something fun that was also a little bit more "big boy" than babyish and I think this is great!! 39. I am in the process of recreating in my 2 yr old sons room. I'm super excited because yours looks awesome! Was wondering how you measured the seams to go down the wall? I thought I seen somewhere to use a pencil and a string? HELP!!! Thx so much!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. We did the string & pencil method (from the top right corner and bottom left). But it wasn't fool-proof. It was wobbly and hard to make a steady line/curve. But it gave us a starting place. You have to stand back and look at the curves and picture where you want them...even them out as needed. So ours was mostly free-handed. I hope this helps.

  40. So SO cute! Hopefully you don't mind us copying you! We didn't do the hole marks or shading though, I'm not patient enough for that :P. Thanks for the great idea, my two year old is going to love it!

  41. Love the room and we too are going to re-create it for our 6 year old baseball nut!! Can you tell me the distance between the top of the ceiling and where the line starts for the baseball threading and again for the other side, the distance from the baseboard to where the line starts? Also, can you please tell me the distance between the two center points of the threading? I know that it is not an exact science, but having some measurements will help keep things proportionate.

    Thank you!!

Did you run into any problem with using paint in your third trimester?
